The word ecology has as many definitions, depending on the context, as plants and animals. An emerging part of todays ecology is upcycling, that is to creatively reuse by transforming by-products, waste materials, useless and/or unwanted products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value.

Systems will only work as well as it’s parts, food is an essential and beautiful part of life, part of the ecology.

Today, through an extensive and impressive system, fresh food is available all year but this wasn’t always the case. In the past, we were relying on good growing season and our ability to preserve. Many techniques were developed and most creations today are based on those, though most of us don’t know how to do this anymore.

Even though we have this extensive and impressive system in place, there are still those who go hungry and those who throw away. Bringing this in balance is quintessential for us at The Freed Food Society, we do this through education, workshops, and preserving what’s going to be thrown away.
